Ubuntu in Action: Empowering Young Adult Friends at the Growing Together Seminar

In October 2024, Friends Career Center (FCC) hosted its annual Growing Together seminar, bringing together young Quakers from Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Inspired by the FWCC World Plenary’s theme, “Living the Spirit of Ubuntu: Responding with Hope to God’s Call to Cherish Creation – and One Another,” the seminar provided a platform for young people to reflect on their roles as changemakers in their communities. Young Adult Friends at the World Plenary Gathering in South Africa, August 2024

The gathering featured dynamic sessions where Young Quaker speakers shared their career journeys and the challenges they’ve faced in balancing professional growth with spiritual and community commitments. Speakers included Dr. Aime Mugisha (Burundi), who led a session on Quaker perspectives on career development, and a panel discussion featuring Pendo Yusufu (Uganda), Irine Wambani (Kenya), and Agape Ishimwe (Rwanda) on building connections and growing networks within the Quaker community

Bainito Wamalwa, FWCC Africa Section Clerk, delivered an empowering keynote, reminding participants of the importance of Ubuntu, the philosophy of interconnectedness. “Today, as we gather here, I appreciate the opportunity to reflect on our co-existence,” Mr. Wamalwa said. “Ubuntu teaches us that I am because you are. It calls on us to live in harmony with one another, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, purpose, and resilience. The steps we take today will shape the history we leave for tomorrow.”

The Growing Together seminar highlighted the transformative power of community, faith, and shared purpose. As the event concluded, participants left inspired to live out the principles of Ubuntu, using their talents and vision to build stronger, more compassionate communities across the region.
